We live in the best times

We live in the best times

I am a first-time mom. I am also a workaholic. Not because I have to be, but because I love my work.

For a long time I believed these two things could not live in the same day. One of them always loses. Usually both.

Then the tools changed.

A usual day

My daughter has two naps a day. That is my office time. Two small windows.

In those windows I open my phone and I give work to my agents. Claude helps me think and write. Cursor writes and fixes code with me. Hark runs the tasks I used to do by hand: it drafts, researches, books, updates, and then waits.

It waits for me.

That is the part I love the most. The work moves forward, but nothing goes out without my approval. I stay the decision maker. The agents do the hours.

So my day looks like this:

  • Morning with my baby girl. Fully present. No laptop.
  • First nap: I set the work.
  • Gym: I lift. My agents work.
  • A long walk with the stroller. My phone buzzes: a task is ready. I read it, I approve it, I keep walking.
  • Second nap: I review, decide, and plan tomorrow.

I run a company from my phone while pushing a stroller. A few years ago I would not have believed it.

Imagine this 10, 20, 50 or 100 years ago

Ten years ago, I would have needed a laptop, a desk and a quiet room. Twenty years ago, an office and long hours in it. Fifty years ago, in many countries, a woman could not even open a bank account without her husband.

A hundred years ago? The choice was simple. Family or work. Most women did not even get to choose.

Oh, poor women. They had so few choices.

I think about them often. So much talent, so much energy, so many ideas, lost to one simple problem: there were not enough hours, and somebody had to be at home.

Today the hours are still the same. Twenty-four. But what I can do in one of them is completely different.

The bicycle of today

I am usually a tech optimist. But this shift is different, and it is why I think technology is the most fascinating thing in the world.

Every big change gave people more freedom of movement:

  • The bicycle gave a woman the freedom to go out alone.
  • The railway made distance smaller.
  • The car made the timetable ours.
  • The airplane made the world one place.

AI agents give us freedom of time. Work no longer needs me to sit in one place for eight hours. It needs my judgement, for a few minutes, at the right moment.

This is the bicycle of today. It is the railway. It is the car. It is the airplane.

What I hoped for seven years ago

Seven years ago I read Kai-Fu Lee's book on AI, AI Superpowers. I still remember the excitement. I could not stop thinking about it.

The idea was simple. Humans will focus on creativity and thinking. Computers will speed up the manual and boring work.

Back then it was a prediction. Today it is my Tuesday.

What it does not replace

The agents do not raise my daughter. They do not lift my weights. They do not decide what my company stands for.

They give me back the time to do those things myself.

Not to work more. To be present more, and still build.

One simple principle

Technology is at its best when it gives us back the things that matter most: time, presence and choice.

We live in the best times. I want to use them well.
